Winter Weather: If the city of Holyoke issues a parking ban on High Street on a class day, class will be cancelled. Please check our Google Maps profile for up-to-date hours and notices of temporary closures. Please get in touch via our contact form if you aren’t sure if winter weather will affect the class schedule.
Trials
It’s hard to say if something new works or clicks or is a good fit if you go one time. Generally, it takes about a month to get a sense of whether or not this can fit into your life, if the vibe is right, and if the commute will work for you. Sign up for a one-month free trial. Try to go to at least one class per week. By the end, if you stick around, you’re well on your way. If you find that it isn’t for you, nothing lost.
Your trial month will introduce you to all the essentials of training karate in the Ueshiro Shorin-Ryu tradition. You’ll learn some Japanese, some old-fashioned, Okiwanan dojo etiquette, how to tie your belt, and a handful of basic techniques, including blocks, locks, and strikes, and some of the broad, philosophical underpinnings of the art. If you’re interested, you can also receive basic guidance in zazen meditation and developing a practice of your own.
